XE'U' CATHEDRAL IN SYDNKY.

Roman Catholic Edifice the Finest of Its Kind iu Australusia.

Tho completion of St. Mary's Roman Catholic cathedral in S.vdney has formed the occasion of a series of imposing celebrations, in which considerable numbers of Protestants have taken part, there existing u warm feeling of friendliness between the denominations, ■with tlie exception of the Orange element.

The iiew building, which-replaces one destriiyeil by fire iiiiuiy years ago, is a fine specimen of ecclesiastical architecture, of Cothic det^igii. It has cost fully £200,000, nearly the whole of which represents offerings fi'oiii the great budy of Catholics iu New South Wales, there being uo rich individual endowments. 'I'lic cathedral is regarded as the grandest example of its kind in .\ustralusia.

At the dedication ceremony the governors of New South Wales and (Queensland, with the Lieutenant-Covernor oC British New Guinea, were present, with many of the leading state otllcials, naval and military olllcers, and principal citizens. The scene was one of unparalleled splendor in Australia.

JACK'S E.4LTI0NS.

Ho Can Now Complain to a Committee Inquiry. ,

From the London Leader.

One of the last acts of the retiring First iMrd of the Admiralty was certainly one of the best. It the intention is carried to a logical conclusion it will be vastly appreciated, and go far towardtt popularizing the navy.

I'lie act referred to is the appointment of 11 special committee to inquire into the victualling of the lower deck ot the navy.

The committee visits all ports, and all haiuls have a chance of being heard; indeed the lower deck have been invited to make suggestions which they liave already taken the opportunity of doing, intimating that in lieu of indifferent Hour, preserved potatoes and tinned meats, as now supplied to the army, should be served out.

Another very strongly supported point is the institution of a later breakfast lime and an additional meal at night, especially to watch keepers.
